Members can start a new group, add friends, and return to separate Groups and Friends areas as their shared plans grow. This structure works for recurring rent and utilities as well as shorter events such as vacations, dinners, or celebrations, making it easier for everyone to understand which costs belong to which circle.
Flexible Expense Splitting and Balance Tracking
Adding an expense turns a shared purchase into an organized balance. Users enter the amount and payer, choose the people involved, and divide the cost equally or with more specific methods such as exact amounts, percentages, or shares. The calculation updates what each person owes, removing the need to rebuild the math by hand whenever someone pays.
An Add expense action is available from the Activity area, while group and friendship views keep related balances attached to the right people. This is useful for uneven restaurant bills, a household purchase paid by one roommate, or trip costs that involve only part of the group, because each entry can reflect the actual arrangement.
Settle Up and Follow Account Activity
Balances become more useful when every participant can follow what changed and close out debts at the right time. Splitwise provides an activity feed for new expenses and other account changes, helping group members review recent actions instead of relying on memory. Notifications can also keep people aware when shared records are updated.
When a balance is ready to be cleared, users can record a payment made outside the app, such as cash or a bank transfer, and supported regions may offer integrated payment choices. The settle-up flow connects the record of who owes whom with the final repayment, so a group can move from ongoing expense tracking to a documented zero balance.
Everyday Sharing Controls and Account Preferences
Splitwise fits repeat situations where the same people share costs over time. Roommates can track rent, utilities, and groceries; couples can maintain joint spending without merging every account; and travelers can keep lodging, transport, and meal expenses together throughout a trip. Private friendships also support one-off bills that do not need a permanent group.
Account preferences provide direct access to device and push notification settings, security, appearance, support, and privacy information. Separate Groups, Friends, Activity, and Account tabs keep frequent tasks predictable, while options to start a group or add an expense remain easy to find. This makes the app practical for both occasional bill splitting and longer-running shared budgets.
