Radar Layers for Storm Tracking
WeatherFront opens on a map-centered radar workspace for following precipitation and severe-weather structure as it develops. Users can press and hold a location to switch to the nearest radar, change products, pan across the map, and play an animated loop instead of treating a single image as the whole forecast picture.
The Android view makes the workflow concrete with national MRMS data, green-to-red rain, mix, and snow intensity coloring, lightning symbols, city labels, and a visible scan-time readout. Dual-pane radar can place two views together for comparison, while custom color and display choices help forecasters, chasers, and curious observers read the map in the way that fits the situation.
Satellite, Models, and Warning Overlays
Radar is only one part of the WeatherFront toolkit. The app brings together satellite imagery, model guidance, surface observations, and outlook products so users can compare current conditions with the broader pattern. GOES imagery, HRRR/GFS and other model views, METAR-style observations, SPC discussions, and NWS watches or warnings give a developing event more context.
Users can move between data categories, overlay selected products, and inspect a location instead of opening separate weather sites. This is useful for pre-trip planning, storm analysis, and quick situational awareness: one screen can connect cloud structure, precipitation, wind or temperature fields, and the alerts that matter nearby.
Detailed Maps for Field Decisions
Mapping tools turn the weather display into a practical planning surface. WeatherFront provides detailed street-level basemaps, road and city display controls, location or address search, and tools for measuring, sampling, drawing, and inspecting areas on the map. Storm chasers, survey teams, and emergency staff can use those controls to connect a weather feature with the roads and places around it.
Offline maps add value when a route moves beyond dependable coverage, while GPS navigation and route planning help keep the map useful away from a desk. The result is a flexible way to prepare a trip, mark an area of interest, estimate distance, or keep geographic context alongside radar and model data.
Personal Layers, Alerts, and Support Controls
Settings lets each user shape the map without burying the core data. The Layers tab exposes switches for Lightning, METARs, Spotters, Storm Chasers, Storm Reports, Storm Tracks, and Loop Data, plus basemap choices such as Satellite. The General tab adds alert highlighting, menu style, screen behavior, and dual-pane synchronization for camera, radar site, and tilt.
That control matters when the same app serves a forecaster, a storm chaser, and a casual weather watcher. Users can keep the display focused, leave the screen awake during monitoring, and adjust how alerts stand out. Support links for contact, release notes, acknowledgements, terms, and privacy are grouped in one place for ongoing app housekeeping.
