Map-Based Field Collection
Mapit GIS puts a working map at the center of a field survey. Users can capture points, lines, and polygons with the phone's GPS or an external GNSS receiver, then move around the map to inspect the area being recorded. The welcome flow introduces Interactive Maps for viewing online and offline basemaps, while GPS Survey keeps feature capture close to the map itself.
For a remote site, the offline-first workflow lets a team carry prepared mapping data and continue recording when a connection is unreliable. The result is a practical field notebook for environmental checks, asset inventories, land surveys, and other jobs where each observation needs a location and a reusable spatial record.
GeoPackage Projects and Attribute Forms
Projects give Mapit GIS a structured place for layers, geometry, and related field information. Each project is stored as a GeoPackage, so a survey can be separated from another job while keeping its layers and settings together. The app's onboarding and data-folder flow make that storage model visible before a user begins collecting.
Within a layer, custom fields turn a simple coordinate into a useful record. Attribute sets can provide drop-down lists, multi-select choices, barcode or QR inputs, and consistent values for repeated inspections. This helps surveyors capture the same details across trees, utilities, plots, samples, or equipment without rebuilding a form for every visit.
Offline Maps and GIS Interoperability
Mapit GIS is designed to keep field mapping useful beyond a single online basemap. Users can add MBTiles for offline background maps and combine them with online WMS, WMTS, WFS, XYZ, or GeoJSON layers when connectivity is available. Layer controls, search, and project management keep the map readable as a job grows.
The same workflow is built for handoff after the survey. Projects can be exported as GeoPackage files for backup or desktop work, while individual layers can move through formats such as GeoJSON, Shapefile, KML, CSV, GPX, DXF, and GeoParquet. That flexibility helps teams move field records into QGIS, ArcGIS, or another spatial workflow without retyping every feature.
GNSS Precision for Professional Surveys
Mapit GIS supports field teams that need more than a rough pin on a consumer map. The app can work with high-accuracy GPS/GNSS equipment, NTRIP RTK corrections, and coordinate-system settings built around EPSG and PRJ4 definitions. These controls let a survey align measurements with the coordinate framework used by a project or organization.
Editing tools add another layer of control once features are on the map. Split, merge, buffer, and topology checks help refine lines and polygons while reducing avoidable overlaps. That combination suits forestry and agriculture work, infrastructure and utilities mapping, road projects, environmental surveys, and site inspections where clean geometry matters as much as fast collection.
