Red-and-Blue Team Clue Battles
Each round divides players into red and blue teams, with a Spymaster guiding the guesses from behind the word grid. The Spymaster links several code words with one clue and a number, while teammates decide which cards fit the connection. Tapping a friendly word advances the team, but an opponent's card gives the other side an opening and the black word can end a risky turn.
The board keeps the central puzzle visible as the turn changes. A counter shows the remaining target cards, and the active team can end its turn when the clue has done enough work. This loop rewards concise language, shared context, and careful discussion rather than fast reflexes, so every guess feels meaningful.
Spymaster Roles and Guessing Strategy
Codenames makes the information gap between roles part of the fun. The Spymaster studies the hidden color pattern and chooses a clue that connects useful words without pointing teammates toward the wrong side. Operatives see the same grid but must interpret the clue, compare possible meanings, and agree on how far to push the number.
A dedicated guide explains the roles before a round begins, and the play board provides a Switch to Spymaster control for moving between views. New groups can use the explanation to learn the rhythm, while experienced players can focus on clue precision, safe first guesses, and the order in which a cluster of words is opened.
Offline Rounds and Online Matches
The home menu offers separate Play Offline and Play Online entry points, letting a group choose how to bring the word grid to the table. Offline play suits a shared phone or tablet when everyone is in the same room. Online play gives a remote group a way to meet around the same clue-and-guess format when an in-person board is not practical.
Both routes keep the main objective easy to understand: one team gives a clue, the other team weighs the possible links, and the board records the consequences. A short round works for a break, while a connected group can keep taking turns and refine its shared vocabulary over several matches.
Word Packs, Guides, and Party Setup
Codenames includes Word Packs for groups that want to vary the vocabulary used in a session. The More Games entry adds another place to explore the developer's wider collection, while the How to Play page gives a quick explanation of Spymaster clues, team colors, and the number attached to each clue. These choices make the first round easier to organize.
The Follow Us area links to social channels and a subscription prompt for people who want news about new offers or releases. Together with the offline and online buttons, these supporting menus help a group move from learning the rules to choosing a mode, setting up a casual party round, and finding another reason to return.
