Session 1.33.5 is a privacy-focused messaging release for users who want to create or restore an Account ID, choose a display name, and move into encrypted conversations without tying signup to a phone number or email. Session’s decentralized routing model is designed for private one-to-one and group communication, with support for attachments, disappearing messages, and community-scale conversations. The Android package targets Android 12 and above and opens to the account-setup flow, where you can choose to create an account or restore one. Messaging still depends on completing that setup and on the network conditions required by Session’s service.
Account ID setup without phone-number signup
Version 1.33.5 starts with a choice to create a Session Account ID or restore an existing identity, then lets you set a display name. This gives personal chats, projects, and communities a deliberate way to exchange contact handles without making a phone number or email the account key.
Encrypted one-to-one and group conversations
Use Session for direct messages, groups, and larger community spaces built around encrypted communication and decentralized routing. Group conversations can accommodate up to 100 members, making the same workflow useful for family updates, volunteer coordination, and focused community threads.
Attachments and flexible message controls
Send voice snippets, photos, and files when text is not enough, and use disappearing-message or custom-theme controls to shape the experience. Voice and video calling is documented as a beta option, so it can complement asynchronous sharing when the required network conditions are available.
