Players can open a compatible backup, use the radial control surface for gamepad input, and choose how the two screens fit together. The visible controls include Merge Screen, Swap, Load, Save, and a central play or fast-forward action, so the main loop stays close to handheld play while remaining practical on a touch display.
The layout is useful when a game needs both screens at once or when a player wants a larger single view. Touch controls and the external-controller option let users move between quick mobile sessions and a more console-like setup without changing the game library.
ROM Library Setup for NDS and 3DS Backups
The ROM list is the starting point for bringing a personal DS collection into the emulator. Free DS For Android supports common .nds, .3ds, and .zip game files, and the emulator is intended for private, legally owned backups. The app's ROM List and Add Folder controls give users a place to point the emulator toward stored files instead of burying the library behind several unrelated menus.
On newer Android storage rules, the app explains that users should create an NDSRom subfolder at the storage root or inside Download, copy their NDS files there, select the folder, and grant access. That setup takes an extra step, but it keeps the library location clear and makes later scanning easier.
Save States and Session Controls
Save and resume controls give Free DS For Android a useful session-management layer. The radial menu includes Load Savestate from file, Quick Load, and Quick Save, letting players protect progress before a difficult section or return to a short session without replaying earlier steps. Close Lid and Fast Forward options add practical controls for games that use a handheld-style pause state or long waits.
The same menu also exposes input-audio emulation and More Actions, so players can reach supporting controls without leaving the current game view. These options suit commuters, short breaks, and longer play sessions where preserving a state matters as much as raw emulation speed.
External Controllers and Transfer Session Play
Players who prefer physical controls can pair Free DS For Android with an external controller, while touch-button and screen-layout customization keeps the phone usable when no gamepad is nearby. That flexibility makes the emulator suitable for a tablet on a stand, a phone held in both hands, or a larger display where the dual-screen layout needs more room.
The Home screen also includes Enable Receiver Mode for Transfer Session. Two Android devices can join the same local Wi-Fi network, pair when needed, and move the current game state to a second device; the feature is not intended for 3D Mode. It is a practical option for switching screens without rebuilding the ROM library from scratch.
